In 1996, San Jose Mercury News writer Gary Webb published a story saying that the CIA was complicit in selling cocaine to L.A. gangs and “funneled millions in drug profits” to the Nicaraguan contras. Webb later committed suicide. The CIA later admitted that it was aware of drug-running, and the meme was adopted by leaders like Louis Farrakhan. As Chuck D said, “Since Reagan and Bush, there’s been nothing but guns and drugs in the black community.”
