A Salt & Battery
80 Second Ave., between 4th St. and 5th St.
212-254-6610

British
The delectable fish-and-chips at A Salt and Battery go limp during delivery, but the homemade meat pies survive the journey with their tastiness intact. Order a rich steak-and-kidney or minced-beef-and-onion pie ($4.50), complemented by a side of mushy peas ($2.50)--a soupy concoction of, well, mushy peas with a hint of mint--then smother it all with gravy. The whole shebang is decadent and delicious. Not surprisingly, it goes great with Boddingtons beer, which is also available.

Thai
Don't let the generic name deter you: This unassuming eatery serves some of the best Thai food in the neighborhood. Traditional entrées include chicken green curry ($7.75) and the fiery Pad Kee Mao ($7.75), a broad noodle dish with grilled beef and vegetables. The saucy concoctions always arrive hot, and regulars claim that if you end your order with the phrase "kap koon kah" ("thank you" in Thai), you just may get a discount.
