A Salt & Battery
80 Second Ave., between 4th St. and 5th St.
212-254-6610
British
The delectable fish-and-chips at A Salt and Battery go limp
during delivery, but the homemade meat pies survive the journey
with their tastiness intact. Order a rich steak-and-kidney or minced-beef-and-onion
pie ($4.50), complemented by a side of mushy peas ($2.50)--a
soupy concoction of, well, mushy peas with a hint of mint--then
smother it all with gravy. The whole shebang is decadent and
delicious. Not surprisingly, it goes great with Boddingtons
beer, which is also available.

zucchini, carrots and spinach, comes with fragrant jasmine rice. As to the scrumptious litchi mango lassi ($3.75), it's as much a dessert as it is a drink.

Crif Dogs
113 St. Mark's Pl., between First Ave.
and Ave. A
212-614-2728
American/ Hot Dogs
As the name implies, Crif Dogs is the joint to call for franks which arrive fast with a minimum of sogginess.
(The fries are another story). The Chihuahua ($3.25),
a pork dog wrapped in bacon then slathered with avocado and sour
cream is strangely fabulous while two New Yorkers ($1.50 each), beef franks topped with ketchup, mustard
and atomic-green relish, can make an equally satisfying meal.

peanuts ($4.50) or the sweet and incredibly spicy tom yum soup
($4.00). Traditional entrées include chicken green curry ($7.75)
and the fiery Pad Kee Mao ($7.75), a broad noodle dish with grilled
beef and vegetables. The saucy concoctions always arrive hot, and regulars claim that if you end your order with the phrase "kap koon kah" ("thank you" in Thai), you just may get a discount.

chicken, grilled salmon or roasted chicken come with one hearty
side like creamy mashed potatoes or honey-glazed sweet potatoes.
Even the vegetables taste sinful! Whatever combo you choose,
you're guaranteed to have leftovers. Beware! Since Mama's makes
