In April, the cabaret queens reigned:Julie Wilson at the Oak Room, Rosemary Clooney at Feinstein’s, Christine Andreas at the Café Carlyle, Margaret Whiting at Arci’s Place—each worth every cent of the many dollars you paid to hear them warble in those tony cages. And yet it’s not just lower prices that make Joe’s Pub “the future of cabaret in New York City”—as one duke of the demimonde says without qualification. It’s the combination of spirited young crowds returning to the Joseph Papp Public Theater and the inspired eclecticism of the programming under the sensitive direction of Bonnie Metzgar and Wiley Hausam. So you may hear cellist Matt Haimovitz play Bach’s Six Suites for Cello Solo one night, torchbearer and ex-Grizabella Liz Callaway singing her heart out the next.
