If your periodical preferences tend to the obscure—Corvette Fever or Sleaze Nation, anyone?—you can do no better than the new Universal News in Times Square, which stays open until 1 a.m. and reopens at 5 a.m. seven days a week. The ideal rendezvous for theater- or cinemagoers (the monolithic AMC 25 is right next door), Universal is a spacious, brightly lit browser’s dream, with an astonishing array of domestic and foreign glossies. But if you’re desperately in need of a copy of Tattoos for Men or Paris Match at, say, 4 a.m., head to the curiously named Gem Spa, an East Village landmark that’s open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Like Universal News, Gem Spa doesn’t stock porno mags (the aforementioned Sleaze Nation is an art magazine, thank you very much), so there’s no seedy feel to the joint. Best of all, because of its downtown location—which puts it incrementally closer to New Jersey distributors—it often gets magazines a day or two before other newsstands.
