Every Wednesday night from eight until closing time at this cozy Park Avenue South watering hole, Brooklyn-based D.J. Jemal C provides one of the more illuminating selections of grooves heard anywhere in the city. Rare soul records sampled by Eminem and Dr. Dre are what catches your ear first, followed by music from next-generation R&B icons like Jill Scott and Musiq Soulchild, Body & Soul–styled deep house, and chilled-out drum ’n’ bass records. “It’s a real esoteric, moody kind of night,” Jemal says. “I’m a firm believer in atmosphere.” It’s an attitude that’s rare among lounge and bar D.J.’s, most of whom aim to force their sensibility upon defenseless drinkers. “I’m not gonna be bangin’ trance records in here,” he says with a laugh. For that, Jemal C gets our eternal gratitude.
