Best Star Gazing
Columbia University Observatory, Pupin Hall
2960 Broadway
At 116th Street
212-854-3276

The Milky Way hasn’t been visible from Manhattan since Ulysses S. Grant was president (except, of course, during the odd blackout). But at Columbia University, the observatory is free and open to the public two Fridays per month, from September through May. Just show up an hour after sunset and follow the signs to the roof, where you can spend two hours star-gazing under the guidance of an astronomy grad student or professor. You may want to maximize your time at the lens by not bringing too many friends.
