This is the Ping-Pong sanctum sanctorum: a gray expanse three flights up from Broadway comfortably laid out with five tables, one draped in webbing. That's where Atanda Musa, Olympic master and eight-time African champion, patiently coaches serious competitors and fledgling players alike, his arms a constant blur. The ladies who play here every Sunday afternoon are refugees from the Y, which relegated their league to ever-smaller, darker rooms — the fate of table-tennis devotees everywhere, which explains the popularity of this place. Musa keeps the action moving, and no one waits too long. Members pay $65 per month. Kids pay $6 per hour — a much healthier addiction than GameCube. No pool table, no bar — nothing but nets.
