Club nights rarely survive when they're transplanted from their original venues -- think of the brief "Body & Soul" moment at Exit or Danny Tenaglia's disastrous attempt at re-creating his legendary President's Day party at WWF nightclub the World. But the promoters of "Shelter" -- which held the Saturday spot at Vinyl for nearly a decade -- beat the odds when they moved to midtown earlier this year. The owners of Speeed wisely renamed their venue Club Shelter and allowed the "Shelter" promoters to bring in a new Phazon sound system courtesy of Twilo. Shelter's series of "construction parties" in mid-January started things off with a major bang when D.J. Timmy Regisford spun a breathtaking mix of music from deep house to new wave to techno. Shelter will also feature live performers (Patti LaBelle is scheduled for late March). Though renovations are still in progress, Shelter's team is already fielding inquiries from promoters across the musical landscape, a testament to its utopian vision for New York nightlife.
