THE NIGHT OPTION 1 OPTION 2
Sunday Hip-hop parties have become an endangered species in Manhattan. But now promoter Derek Corley has stepped into the breach with Candy Store (the Mint, 225 East Houston Street; 212-475-3200). Once a staple at Limelight, Drama! recently moved to Centro-Fly (45 West 21st Street; 212-627-7770) and has been renamed Drama! At Large. Don't panic: The Chelsea boys still own the dance floor.
Monday Art students, fashionistas, and "Pop Muzik" enthusiasts dance to electrowave at Art Fag on the lit-up, multicolored dance floor of Passerby (436 West 15th Street; 212-206-7321). Be sure to wear your Members Only jacket. Tronic Treatment, a party beloved by discerning techno fans for hosting D.J.'s like Claude Young, Derrick May, and Richie Hawtin, has moved from Guernica to Baktun (418 West 14th Street; 212-206-1590).
Tuesday At White Label (Soho Grand Bar and Lounge, 310 West Broadway; 212-965-3588), D.J.'s Ben Butler and Kenosha spin downtempo grooves, but the real stars are weekly special guests like Miss Kittin and Layo and Bushwacka! Chemistry at APT (419 West 13th Street; 212-414-4245): D.J. Smash, who made a name for himself by remixing the Blue Note catalogue on his mixed CD Phonography, spins an eclectic mix of house, funk, soul, and rare groove.
Wednesday Spa (76 East 13th Street; 212-677-5772) has two parties tonight: D.J. Paul Sevigny's incomprehensible mixes of rock 'n' roll, pop, and funk (Soul Music First) and D.J. Spencer Product's fresh new electro (Shattered). D.J. Rich Medina spins Afro-funk from the likes of Fela Kuti at Little Ricky's Rib Shack, the Fader magazine-sponsored weekly at meatpacking-district lounge APT (419 West 13th Street; 212-414-4245).
Thursday Progressive-house and soulful-house icons -- from Seb Fontaine to Frankie Knuckles -- man the turntables at Subliminal Sessions (Centro-Fly, 45 West 21st Street; 212-627-7770). Every last Thursday of the month, Ron Trent spins deep-house at Giant Step Records Sessions (Shine, 285 West Broadway; 212-941-0900), a label that's been having a great run thanks to Jody Watley and Carl Hancock Rux.
Friday Defying the trend, deep-house weekly Bang the Party recently returned to Manhattan from Fort Greene. As of March 15, its frenzied following can be found at the subterranean nightspot Opaline (85 Avenue A; 212-995-8684). The Con-fu-sion Crew (who formerly promoted several good nights) recently took over Baktun (418 West 14th Street; 212-206-1590) for the British-house-accented shoodBgood.
Saturday Tedd Patterson, veteran of the Magic Sessions at Miami's Winter Music Conference, is among the D.J.'s spinning at brand-new Flatiron nightspot Discothèque (17 West 19th Street; 212-352-9999). Promoters Marcus and Dominique draw everyone from house icon Junior Sanchez to techno evil genius D.J. Hell at Centro-Saturday (Centro-Fly, 45 West 21st Street; 212-627-7770).
