Lost City Arts

If you require a set of original Eames chairs, you'll have to: (a) start haunting estate auctions and garage sales; (b) spend your life searching eBay; or (c) let a store owner with a great eye do the digging, and pay the (considerable) premium. The best eyes we know are at Lost City Arts, where handsome specimens by all the great mid-century names (Eames, Bertoia, Aalto, McCobb) are surrounded by spectacular architectural artifacts: It's the place to go if you happen to need, say, a fragment of Steeplechase Park.

GREAT DEAL: If the prices at Lost City do send you screaming to the yard sales, stop first at Astroturf, located on Smith Street in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. You won't satisfy high-design desires here (though an occasional pedigreed piece does turn up); this is a place to find accessories for that sleek furniture a handsome amoeba-shaped platter for the sideboard, or a kitschy set of flour/sugar/coffee/tea canisters often for under $50.
