Uptown or down, some stores are magnets for the fashion-forward. Since 1985, some of our savviest have been flocking to Linda Dresner's Park Avenue boutique. In addition to such staples as Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto, Dresner (who is credited with first bringing Jil Sander to our shores) today carries such experimenters as Martin Margiela, Dries van Noten, Marni, and Angelo Figus.

If it's more obscure, homegrown talent you're looking for, head to the Lower East Side and Seven New York, where Joseph Quartana and John Demas have curated some of the coolest items around. Alongside conceptual designers from across the pond like Bernard Wilhelm, Carol Christian Poelle, and Marjan Pejoski (remember Björk's swan dress at the Oscars?), Seven promotes a dense gathering of young and independent New Yorkers, including up-and-comer Benjamin Cho, the kooky collective As Four, and the deconstructed frocks of Tess Giberson.
