Ever try to ask an electronics-store clerk the real difference between Sony and Canon digital cameras? What a “mega-pixel CCD” is? Or when it’s okay to use the built-in sound equipment installed on your camcorder, and when you should switch to a shotgun or super-directional mike? At your average chain electronics store, you’ll be met with a) a blank stare, b) specious bluster, or c) “Let me go ask my manager.” Not at B&H Photo-Video, the legendary photo megastore that now also rules the digital realm. Prices here are generally as low as you’ll find anywhere in town, but B&H throws in real, no-nonsense expertise. You may not want to immediately invest in a fluid-head or pan-and-tilt tripod or an elaborate tungsten lighting rig to go with your new DV camcorder, but at least you’ll know where to go when you decide to upgrade your pretensions from early Cops to late Spielberg.
