As luxuries go, a made-to-measure men’s dress shirt is on the lower end of the scale, hard by the necessities of life but still an indulgence, like a two-seater sports car. At Borelli, the entire shirt is hand-stitched, by one of 50 kindly ladies in Italy (her name is right there on the tag), from the 1,700 fabric patterns and 100 collar styles available in the store. Shirts start at $340 and rise to $625 for really expensive cottons and thread counts (they prefer a minimum order of six shirts) and take six to eight weeks for delivery. There are plenty of shirtmakers at work in New York, but once you’ve worn a Borelli, everything else will feel like life in the slow lane.
