- The Skate Truck NYC
-
Both of Gypsy Lucas’s grandmothers worked at roller-skating rinks, her parents met at a roller-skating competition, and her dad owns two rinks in Waco, Texas; naturally, after moving to New York, she noticed straightaway the city’s lack of roller culture. So she outfitted an old moving truck to accommodate 150 pairs of her dad’s used skates and Rollerblades, and launched the city’s only mobile skate rental. For $25, adults get skates for the day, plus protective gear and even a brief lesson. In wintertime, the truck services parties and private events, but come spring, it will park weeknights at skate-friendly locations throughout the city. Weekends, meanwhile, are spent at the Bandshell in Central Park, where rookies can pick up moves from the dance-skaters who’ve been getting down there for years.
