In the eighties, Joan Judge haunted thrift shops and the famous couture auctions at William Doyle Galleries, where, she says, she’d buy “anything that was beautiful” that she could afford. Now she sells these treasures at Brooklyn Public Couture, a sliver of a shop brimming with hats, handbags, silk lingerie, luggage, and clothing from 1900 on -- many items with the auction or shop tags still attached. Judge has a particular love for haute clothes from the eighties and early nineties: among her current items, a Thierry Mugler raw-silk black-and-white empire-waist dress not unlike Julia Roberts’s Oscar gown ($600) and a red velvet strapless Jean Paul Gaultier number made sporty by snap pockets and detachable bustle ($800).
