Freddy’s
627 Fifth Ave., nr. 17th St., South Slope; 718-768-0131
Devotees of the Prospect Heights dive Freddy’s kicked up a major media dust storm before it was shuttered in May 2010 to make way for the Atlantic Yards project. But rumors of the bar’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. In February, bartenders Donald O’Finn, Matt Kimmett, and Matt Kuhn transplanted the icon to the South Slope, trucking over the original Prohibition-era red mahogany bar (graced by the “chains of justice” symbolizing the saloon’s eminent-domain battle), scratched-up tables, and even portions of the graffiti-covered bathroom wall. Those touches, along with a batch of original tchotchkes (a stuffed marlin, a four-inch stiletto), make first-gen Freddy’s patrons feel right back at home.
